What does it mean to abide in Jesus? The word abide appears over 80 times in the Bible. Lets dive into what it means and how we can apply it to our daily lives.
Google offers 3 definitions of abide:
1. Accept or act in accordance with (a rule, decision or recommendation)
2. Be unable to tolerate (something or someone)
3. (of a memory or feeling) continue without failing or being lost
So a few ways to define abiding in Jesus is to accept His rules and guidance, and to never forget Him or loose Him. Our feelings towards Him should never be pushed to the back burner and forgotten about. Abiding in Him should be our top priority!
Whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked. 1 John 2:6
Whoever keeps his commandments abides in God, and God in him. And by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit whom he has given us. 1 John 3:24 ESV
“I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit…..Abide in me, and I in you. As thebranch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine;you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in me he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples. As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.John 15:1-11

Abiding in Jesus is the only way to bear fruit.
I think we all know what fruit that is:
Galations 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.
Unless we are abiding in the Jesus we can’t have true love.
Unless we are abiding in the Jesus we can’t have joy and peace.
Unless we are abiding in the Jesus we can’t have patience.
Unless we are abiding in the Jesus we can’t have kindness, goodness, or gentleness.
Unless we are abiding in the Jesus we can’t have faithfulness or self-control.
If you break a bunch of tiny green grapes off of their vine, those grapes are never going to grow into fat and juicy purple grapes! They will just shrivel up and die.
If we cut ourselves off from Jesus and His Word we will shrivel up and die as well.
In order to stay connected to Jesus’ well of living water, we need to continue to seek Him, pray, read His word and obey. The more we seek Him and ask Him to fill us with His presence, the more fruit we will see in our lives.
Reader, I am praying for you today!! Keep abiding in Jesus!!
