“Mommy, I can’t find baby Jesus!”
The four-year-old spoke to her mother, referring to the advent calendar. The calendar had pockets for twenty-five of the nativity characters. Baby Jesus wasn’t in his pocket.
“Oh dear,” the mother responded, “He’s the most important one!”
A while later the little girl runs back to her mother. “I found Him, I found Him! He was in the wrong pocket!”
Where is Jesus in your life?
Everyone has different pockets in their lives – priorities like Family, Friends, School, Writing, Entertainment, Money, Sports, Health, Media, Work, etc. These are our pockets and there is a certain order they are supposed to be in. All of the pockets in our lives can be divided into three big ones – Jesus, Others, Yourself. (IN THAT ORDER!!!)
Jesus belongs in pocket number one. He is first and foremost and to have him in any other pocket will throw your life out of wack. If Jesus is in pocket number one you may be surprised to find him in pockets two and three as well. You’ll serve others with the right motives – with a mindset of Jesus loves these people and they need to know that.
Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’ Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’
Mattew 25:34-40
And when you are in pocket three – working, hanging out with friends, any kind of entertainment – you’ll find that Jesus is still forefront in your mind, and that you will be doing all for His glory. If Jesus is in His proper place in your life, you will find it’s so much easier to focus on what matters, pocket number three won’t just be about yourself anymore. You’ll finally find fulfillment in your work, in your writing, in your relationships, because ultimately the fulfillment won’t be from those things – it’ll be from Jesus.
But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
Matthew 6:33
Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.
Philippians 2:3
but they have themselves first to the Lord and then by the will of God to us.
2 Corinthians 8:5
Is Jesus in His proper pocket in your life? Is He first?
And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
Colossians 3:17

You’re absolutely right, Autumn. When Jesus is at the center of everything, our lives become ordered correctly. Thank you so much for posting this reminder of what – Who – is most important! 🙂

I LOVE that Autumn! And I totally agree! Even when you’re in pocket three, Jesus is still at the top! 😊 What a wonderful reminder! ❤️

This post was such a perfect reminder for me! I especially liked your point about Jesus being in the other pockets as well. It can be easy to kind of compartmentalize Jesus into devotion time or church time or whatever, but He really has to be in every pocket, every section of our lives for us to receive and give His fullness.
Great post!
